At the same time than the visits at Exxaro and SAB Miller, a delegation of 7 students met the Minister of High Education and the Minister of Science and Technology in Pretoria. The students, along with Ms Line Dubé, director of the international relationships office at Polytechnique Montreal, got the chance to understand the strategies of the governement in terms of education and technological innovation in the agricultural and chemical manufacturing sectors.

Visit of the Alrode brewery of SAB Miller

The group visited today the SAB Miller brewery of Alrode, the biggest in Africa as well as in the Southern Hemisphere. SAB Miller is the unique producer of beer in South Africa, offering lager and stout beers in all the country. The students enjoyed those products during a tasting session following the visit of the plant.

This morning, 19 students of the mission were received by Exxaro where they learned about their activities and strategies. Exxaro is the second largest producer of coal in South Africa, and is also a supplier of mineral sands and iron ore. Most of its coal is directly sold to Eskom, the national electricity company.

Discussion with the High Commission of Canada

Visit at Mintek

Poly-Monde went this morning to Mintek, a government agency in the department of mineral ressources. It focuses on research and development projects applied to the mining industry in order to maximize the profits.

Visit at SASA and SASRI

For their second and last visit in the city of Durban, the mission members visited the facilities of the South African Sugar Association (SASA). First, the members of the company showed us the Shukela Training Center, a training center open to those who wish to specialize in technical fields related to agriculture. Then, a conference on the sugar market has been given. The team finally visited the offices of the South African Sugarcane Research Institute (SASRI) to attend a lecture on their research and development in the field of sugar. The team finally went to the airport, to take a plane to Johannesburg.

Visit of the Richards Bay Coal Terminal

After the Richards Bay Minerals, the Poly-Monde team went to the Richards Bay Coal Terminal to visit the installations. Its the biggest port in the world that specialized in coal exportation. The team enjoyed a delicious Braai, a South African specialty. They afterward went to Durban.

The Poly-Monde team arrived yesterday in the industrial city of Richards Bay, to assist to the first visits of the mining sector. A busy day was waiting for them, with a visit in the morning of the Richards Bay Minerals mine.

Cape Point and Rugby Game

The first week in South Africa has just been concluded by a wonderful day passed at Cape Point. Located on the Cape of Good Hope peninsula, this place is full of incredible plants and magnificent sights. Tomorrow: direction Richard’s Bay to pursue the visits in a new region of South Africa!

This last day in Cape Town ended up on a rugby game between Cape Town’s Stormers and Bloomfoentein’s Cheetahs! The Stormers won by 16 to 14!
